It is a small tern, recognizable by its yellow bill with a black tip, white forehead, and yellow legs. The outer primaries are blackish. Its tail is short and twitches jerkily. The sexes are alike. It is the smallest of the European terns.
Following the heatwaves of July and August, the heat has become particularly grueling—not only for us humans but also for birds and wildlife in general. Conditions during this period are not ideal for photography outings; whenever possible, these should be undertaken early in the morning.
